In cities with soft water, heating elements can last close to the full 10 to 12 year lifespan of the tank itself. The Lower Element Fails First
Sediment settles at the bottom of the tank, right where the lower element sits, so it typically fails before the upper one. This shows up as hot water that runs out faster than it used to, rather than a complete lack of hot water.
